Irrespective of your current fitness phase, research has proven that a high protein diet can significantly aid your fitness journey whether your goal be fat loss or muscle gain. Do not get me wrong here, eating well balanced meals daily should be a part of you but more protein can also go a long way! On today’s story, i will be giving you the benefits of having more protein in your diet and also some of my favorite sources of high protein.

BENEFITS OF A HIGH PROTEIN DIET

Reduced hunger levels

This can be really helpful especially if your goal is fat loss. It is no news that to loose weight you must be in a caloric deficit and burn more than you consume. Well consuming more protein can help you control portion sizes and keep you full for a long time which in turn will help you reduce your food intake thereby providing you with that caloric deficit you need to loose fat.

Increases muscle mass

If your goal is to gain size, then you should definitely consider adding more protein. Protein is one of the macronutrients that helps repair worn out tissues so after a workout, taking a rich source of protein will help repair the micro tears which your muscle fibers would have experienced and then making it grow back bigger and stronger.

Increases fat burning

Protein has been proven to be the macronutrient with the highest thermic effect. This simply means that protein alone can burn up to 30% of its own caloric makeup! Let’s assume you take about 100 calories of protein, the thermic effect can cause it to burn up to 30 calories all by it self and leaves 70 usable calories for your body’s need.

Increased metabolism

A high protein intake can significantly increase your body’s metabolism which in turn can burn a lot of calories including during sleep. But note, this effect can only take place when you are in a caloric surplus and consuming more protein.

Prevents muscle loss

Assuming you stop lifting weights for a while and you still manage to stick with that high protein diet, it can prevent rapid muscle loss when compared to sticking with just a regular diet. Not only can protein prevent rapid muscle loss, it can also keep your metabolism relatively high so you can keep loosing fat while maintaining your muscle mass especially when backed up by strength training.

My favorite sources of protein

  • Meats: Chicken, turkey, lean beef, pork, etc.
  • Fish: Salmon, sardines, haddock, trout, etc.
  • Eggs: All types.
  • Dairy: Milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.
  • Legumes: Kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils, etc.

You can also make more research on what you feel most comfortable with and something that will be easy to add to your daily intake for longevity.

These are some proven benefits of a high protein diet. I encourage you to try it out and see the results for yourself!
